What you're looking for on a website are things like availability of a catalogue, advertised digital resources, and a program calendar (if a public library). It isn't really indicative of the quality of the library. Many libraries have some pretty lackluster websites. Definitely check out their website, but don't be deterred by it. Each library is different and operates differently in order to best serve their community. Wherever you decide to apply, learn a little bit about their library before you go in for an interview. If so, use that to speak to your technology skills for sure. If you have experience in nursing, I imagine you might have some experience in those giant and confusing healthcare computer programs. Your ability to pick up new computer programs will be important too as a big concern that a lot of library managers have is training a new person on their ILS (integrated library system). ![]() You would think people would know that, but I've heard it more than once in interviews I was observing.Īs a library assistant you'll be dealing with people constantly so, as other posters have said, your customer service skills are very important. When they ask why you want to work in the library, absolutely do not answer "I like to read" or "I like quiet."
